EDTA is a chelator, which means it binds to metal ions in a solution, making them inactive. 

This helps to prevent cosmetic formulations and other personal care products from deteriorating and undergoing unwanted consistency and pH changes. 

EDTA also helps to maintain the integrity of the skin by preventing metal ions from clogging pores and depositing onto the skin.
